Wisconsin 2026 elections: Democrat Shirley Hinze once against challenges 3-term GOP incumbent Elijah Behnke in 6th Assembly District

The 6th Assembly District includes all of Menominee County, most of Shawano County, and parts of western Oconto County, and northeast Waupaca County.

Based on the 2024 election results, redistricting made AD6 even more conservative than it was before.  Shirley Hinze was also Behnke's challenger in 2024.

Bird flu targets cows' mammary glands

Sneha Khedkar reports:
In 2024, dairy cattle in northern Texas’s panhandle region suffered from a sudden illness. The milk that affected cows produced was thick and creamy yellow. The animals’ postmortem examination showed signs of mastitis, an inflammatory condition that damages mammary gland tissues.
“Mastitis is a classic disease in milk-production animals, and veterinarians were dutifully looking to all the usual suspects for the source, like bacterial pathogens,” said Suresh Kuchipudi, a veterinary microbiologist at the University of Pittsburgh in a statement.
However, deeper investigations of the affected animals’ milk, serum, and tissue samples revealed an unlikely suspect: an H5N1 strain of the highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus, which causes bird flu. “When the real culprit turned out to be bird flu, everyone in the field was caught completely by surprise. We hadn't even remotely considered that cattle could be a host for H5N1,” said Kuchipudi. One of the most striking observations was that instead of affecting the lungs like it does in other mammals, H5N1 targeted the cows’ mammary glands.

Sweden reports outbreak of bird flu

Headline:  WATT Poultry, 6/19/2026

Jackie Linden reports:
Over the past two weeks, the only European country to detect the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in commercial poultry has been Sweden.
In early June, a spike in mortality in mallard ducks kept for restocking game and breeding was initially blamed on heat stress. Around 1,000 of the almost 50,000 birds at the farm in Helsingborg died.
Subsequently, the H5N1 HPAI virus was detected at the premises, according to the official notification from the national animal health authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
The source of infection is unknown. Located in Skåne county, Helsingborg is in southwest of Sweden.
