California bird flu news: It's everywhere, it's everywhere!

At the Santa Cruz County Fair, a bird flu outbreak forced officials to ban live chicken shows, disrupting a long-running 4-H tradition where kids typically present and handle their own birds. Instead, young competitors used stuffed chickens and submitted videos, missing the hands-on experience that helps teach animal care and responsibility.
The ban reflects broader concerns about highly contagious H5N1 avian influenza, which has killed hundreds of millions of birds and led to strict biosecurity measures in agriculture. Experts say allowing poultry to gather at fairs could spread the disease to other animals or commercial farms, even as they acknowledge the educational loss for children.
