Over the past week, periods of freedom from HPAI have recently ended in Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok in central Hungary, and the southern county of Bacs-Kiskun. For the first of these, a three-month hiatus ended last month, when a flock of around 17,700 foie-gras geese tested positive for the H5N1 virus. In the first week of February, the same virus variant was detected in 13,500 meat ducks at a farm in Bacs-Kiskun — a first outbreak in this county since May of last year.
Also in Hungary, a third HPAI outbreak in recent weeks has hit another flock of geese for foie-gras production in the southeastern county of Bekes, according to a separate WOAH report.
At the end of January, presence of the H5N1 virus was confirmed after 500 birds died out of a flock of around 21,000 breeding chickens in Silesia in Poland. According to the official notification, this southwestern province had been free of this infection for more than seven months. A second flock there has since tested positive for HPAI.
As of February 6, 30 HPAI outbreaks had occurred in Poland so far this year, reports the nation’s chief veterinary inspectorate. Directly impacted have been close to 3.6 million commercial poultry in nine of its 16 provinces.
