Joe Carroll reports:
A truck crash Friday forced the temporary closure of U.S. 33 in both directions just north of Churubusco, and a specialized team was called in for clean-up because of the nature of the cargo the truck was hauling.
According to the Whitley County Emergency Management Agency, the truck, which belongs to Waste Management, rolled into a ditch at around 8:20 a.m. in the 6000 block of North U.S. 33. It was carrying dead ducks from various Maple Leaf Duck Farms facilities in northern Indiana that had been infected with bird flu.
Authorities said there is no known threat to the public; however, a 100-foot perimeter was established at the crash site. Waste Management, Maple Leaf Farms, and the Indiana Board of Animal Health worked together to safely remove the birds.
Motorists and residents were asked to avoid the area throughout the day.
"Throughout the day"?  Must have been a lot of dead dead in that cargo.
