Wisconsin 2026 elections: Incumbent Sylvia Ortiz-Velez has a Democratic challenger in the 8th Assembly District

The 8th Assembly District comprises most of Milwaukee's south side.  As a result of redistricting, its boundaries were pushed farther south below West Lincoln Avenue.

The 8th District is solidly Democratic.  Current officeholder Sylvia Ortiz-Velez ran unopposed in 2022 and 2024.  As a result of a Capitol brouhaha she initiated earlier this year, she is being challenged for her seat by a fellow Democrat Ismael Luna.  Waiting in the wings is Republican Angel Sanchez, who ran unsuccessful in both 2018 and 2020.

Prior to 2024, the district had been represented by Daniel Riemer, who was first elected to the Assembly in November 2012.  He chose not to run for a 7th term.  In 2018, he ran against a Libertarian candidate, and in 2020 he was unopposed.

Lee Whiting previously challenged Karen Kirsch in 2024.  This rematch is likely not to go any better for him.

MISCREANT PREACHERS: "A significant allegation' in the Name of the Lord (#335 in a series)

Photo and headline:  Roys Report, 6/11/2026

Daniel Silliman report:
An Indiana megachurch that has long defended its pastor from internal and external criticism changed course Wednesday and fired him. Northview Church, a multi-site with 14 locations from Indianapolis to Lafayette, announced the dismissal of C. J. Johnson in an email that assured members the decision wasn’t as sudden as it seemed.
“We recognize that this news may bring a range of emotions,” the June 10 email said. “The elders did not arrive at this decision quickly or lightly.”
The dismissal is effective immediately. The email said that the church investigated “a significant allegation” last year and that all three executive pastors serving under Johnson brought additional concerns to the elders last month.
Church leaders did not explain the nature of those concerns, saying only that they included “leadership style,” “interpersonal conduct” and “behaviors.”

"An overseer must be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money."  (1 Timothy 3:2-3)
