The Kossuth County flock which had about 7,000 pheasants and 120 chickens, according to a spokesperson with IDALS, marked the first Iowa bird flu case of 2026. IDALS last announced a detection of the bird flu in a Dallas County, mixed species flock in late December.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the H5N1 strain of HPAI has impacted more than 186 million domestic birds since the outbreak began in 2022.
So far in January 2026, APHIS reports more than 1.1 million birds have been affected by the flu, with the majority of outbreaks for the month occurring in Minnesota and Kansas.
