Meet environmental Frankenstein Tom Tiffany

Headline:  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 10/28/2026

Laura Schulte reports:
In 2017, Tiffany was one of the main authors of legislation that ended the state's "prove it first law" that required mining companies to prove they could safely mine without harming the environment.
Tiffany, then a state senator, argued that modern mining technology would allow sulfide mining to be carried out without risks, and that allowing mining would employ more people through re-energizing the industry.
The bill passed largely along party lines, with all Democrats and one Republican voting against it in the Senate, and four Republicans joining Democrats in voting against it in the Assembly.
The law, when it was signed by then-Gov. Scott Walker, repealed previous legislation put into place in 1998 signed by Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson.

In addition to metallic mining, Tiffany was also instrumental in the changes to rules around frac-sand mining in the state, and in 2013 worked to introduce a bill that limited the local control of counties and communities to regulate the sand minds. [emphasis added]
