Idaho reports cases of bird flu in cattle at 5 dairy farms

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, also known as bird flu) has been confirmed in five Idaho dairy herds, according to USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). 
These five cases are the first confirmed cases of HPAI in livestock this year. 
Prior to these five cases, the most recent confirmed case was in Wisconsin in December 2025. Prior to this week, the most recent confirmed case of HPAI in an Idaho dairy herd was in October 2025. 
Since HPAI was first confirmed in dairy cattle in March 2024, there have been 1,093 confirmed cases in 19 states, according to APHIS statistics.
