From the graph, it appears that some families have been moving on from Craig, Colorado, since 2010

The population of Craig has decreased 6% since 2010.

Matt cooper uses a word that will cause another of Trump's all-night Truth Social binges.
Like many families here, the Coopers have worked in coal for generations — and in oil before that. That’s ending for Matt Cooper and his son Matthew as one of three coal mines in the area closes in a statewide shift to cleaner energy.
“People have to start looking beyond coal," said Matt Cooper. “And that can be a multitude of things. Our economy has been so focused on coal and coal-fired power plants. And we need the diversity.”
Craig is the county seat of Moffat County, which has a 2024 estimated population of 13,142, down 5% from its 2010 peak of  13,795.

It's solid-red MAGA.  Trump received more than 80% of the votes in 2016, 2020, and 2024.

If these folks can look beyond coal, anybody can.

Yet again not a peep from spineless Louisiana GOP U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D.

Dr. Bill is chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). He voted to confirm RFKjr as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He values his personal political survival over public health.

Trump administration can't be bothered to hide its racism anymore ('civilization erasure' edition)

Headline:  New York Times, 12/5/2025

Michael D. Shear, Jeanna , and Lara Jakes report:
The Trump administration said on Friday that Europe was facing the “stark prospect of civilizational erasure” and pledged that the United States would support like-minded “patriotic” parties across the continent to prevent a future in which “certain NATO members will become majority non-European.”
The grim assessment of Europe’s future was released overnight as part of an annual update to the United States’ national security strategy around the world.\
Without naming them directly, the document says the United States should be “cultivating resistance” across Europe by supporting political parties that fight against migration and promote nationalism. That describes several right-wing populist parties like Reform U.K. in Britain and the Alternative for Germany, known as the AfD, which has been classified as an extremist party by German intelligence services. Washington Business Journal editor-in-chief puzzles out why Shalom Baranes accepted White House ballroom commission

Headline:  Washington Business Journal, 12/5/2025

Our managing editor, Michael Neibauer, and I have been covering Baranes for years. I first interviewed him for a profile in 2006, when he told me a little about his approach, saying, “I’m really someone who will spend a long time thinking about the building and what kind of a building it should be."
[snip]
So you have to wonder why he would risk a stellar career and near pristine reputation for a project that could possibly end up in disaster. He could be publicly fired and castigated by the developer-in-chief or ostracized among his colleagues and clients.
Baranes, who for obvious reasons declined our request for comment, must think he can persuade the president to create a ballroom that's both fitting of the White House and fits alongside the White House. I can't imagine he'd have accepted the job if he didn't think he could do that.
But let's take a moment to review the Shalom Baranes Associates portfolio. The architect has built his reputation on modern architecture, not the classical architecture Trump has vowed to bring back through executive order. Baranes is not known for the gold gilding and over-the-top extravagances often found in Trumpland. Clean lines like CityCenterDC and the Nigerian chancery are his calling card. [emphasis added]

Greetings from South Dakota (anti-vaxxer edition)

Headline and survey results:  South Dakota Searchlight, 12/5/2025

Close to half of South Dakotans aren’t up-to-date on their flu shots or their hepatitis B vaccinations, new vaccine survey results released by the South Dakota Department of Health indicate.
About 63% aren’t up-to-date on their HPV vaccinations, which protect against most cases of cervical cancer, and 78% aren’t up-to-date on their pneumococcal vaccinations, which help protect against pneumococcal infections.
That’s “concerning” to Keith Hansen, president of the South Dakota State Medical Association. Vaccinations are “one of the most important developments in health” to keep people and communities healthy, he said.
As a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist, he is especially concerned with how vaccine-preventable diseases can affect pregnant women and newborn children. [emphasis added]

Latest avian flu research from Iowa State University

Headline:  Phys Org, 12/4/2025

Dave Roepke reports:
An ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has affected more than 184 million domestic poultry since 2022 and, since making the leap to dairy cattle in spring 2024, more than 1,000 milking cow herds.
A new study led by Iowa State University researchers shows that the mammary glands of several other production animals—including pigs, sheep, goats, beef cattle and alpacas—are biologically suitable to harbor avian influenza, due to high levels of sialic acids.
"The main thing we wanted to understand in this study is whether there is potential for transmission among these other domestic mammals and humans, and it looks like there is," said Rahul Nelli, the study's lead author and a research assistant professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine.  [emphasis added]

Michigan DNR sends out an avian flu advisory to waterfowl hunters

This fall, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported increasing outbreaks of HPAI in commercial and backyard poultry flocks, including new detections in counties with popular waterfowl hunting destinations.
The DNR reports more HPAI detections in 2025 than were found in 2024; 130 wild birds have tested positive for HPAI in Michigan, with most detections in Canada geese, bald eagles and red-tailed hawks. Wildlife detections and pending cases are posted on the DNR’s HPAI webpage.
The disease has been found in every Michigan watershed, indicating that it has occurred throughout the state.

Avian flu kills scores of geese in rural Manitoba Canada

Map:  World Atlas
Headline:  CBC News, 12/4/2025

A Niverville resident is shocked to have seen scores of dead geese on the retention pond in his backyard — and even one on his back deck.
All of them were killed by an avian flu outbreak.
Mason Goulet noticed a handful of Canada geese on the ice, struggling to move, about three weeks ago.
"Some of them we thought were maybe frozen into the ice," Goulet said Thursday from his porch. "It turns out they were actually sick."
