MAGA Team Drool conducts master class in gullibility

Headline:  Gizmodo, 10/5/2024
Donald Trump launched Truth Social in 2022 as a social media platform where the MAGA faithful could hang out without any liberals to spoil the fun. The biggest selling point? It was the only place where Trump was personally posting his unhinged screeds after getting banned from Twitter over that whole coup attempt. But new documents obtained by Gizmodo reveal the site has also been flooded with scammers who are swindling users out of enormous sums of money. We’re talking about people who’ve lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in a relatively short period of time.
Gizmodo submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the FTC for consumer complaints about Truth Social filed in the past two years. The complaints to the federal agency include some stories from people who’ve been banned from the site (unjustly, they claim) and others who say they got signed up for mailing lists they never wanted to be on in the first place. But the complaints about scams are the most shocking, if only because there are such large sums of money involved. And we’re publishing a sample of the full, unedited complaints below.

Meet the Texans on the front lines of the GOP War on Women

Headline:  Hawaii Tribune Herald, 10/6/2024
The bellwether state is Texas, the only state to impose its abortion ban as early as September 2021, even before the Supreme Court’s June 2022 ruling in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned the nationwide abortion right guaranteed by Roe vs. Wade in 1973.
That timing has allowed analysts to generate statistics on maternal mortality in 2022 (for other antiabortion states, those statistics won’t be available until early next year). The Texas statistics are horrific.
As compiled by the Los Angeles-based Gender Equity Policy Institute initially at the request of NBC News, they show that maternal deaths rose in Texas to 28.5 per 100,000 live births in 2022, exceeding the national rate of 22.3. “
The data are telling us that Texas is a harbinger of what is to come in states that ban abortion,” says GEPI President Nancy L. Cohen.

GET ME REWRITE: GOP shows off its hypocrisy with embrace of mail-in ballots

 \
HeadlineWisconsin State Journal, 10/6/2024
Conservative voters who have been skeptical of mail voting and ballot gathering, a strategy often used by Democrats, are warming up to it. Evangelical Christians, in particular, are embracing it this year.
Leading conservative figures Charlie Kirk and Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump have called on Christians and conservatives to collect ballots. Megachurches like Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Southern California are leading the charge, urging — even training — congregations to collect ballots. They praise it as a valuable tool to raise voter turnout and elect candidates who align with their views on issues such as abortion, transgender rights and immigration.

In other words, pushing issues that show what phony Christians they are.

Performative far-right politics of Mo Ron DeSantis a disaster for Florida

And to think this guy was actually taken seriously as a Presidential candidate.

Top headline NPR

From NPR
This week, Key West, Fla., experienced record-high temperatures, with a heat index of 115 degrees. Even the late Jimmy Buffett would have had trouble finding enough margaritas for that. Parts of South Florida were also hit by smoke from wildfires burning hundreds of miles away in Mexico. This is also the week that Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation that removes the words climate change from many state laws.

Alexander has been a consistently popular baby name for boys, only briefly charting below #200 for a 10-year, mid-century stretch (1956-1965).  He really started coming into his own during the 1980s and has remained in the top 30 since 1990.  He peaked at #4 in 2009.

Day 1437 of GOP election denier hysteria (Trump Big Lie Clown Show Circus Wisconsin Looney Tunes edition)

The endless parade
 of clown show zombies
Starring GOP congressman
Scott Fitzgerald

Just days after being sworn in to his first term in Congress, Representative Scott Fitzgerald joined 146 other congressional Republicans in voting against certifying President Biden’s 2020 electoral victory. According to an investigation by two Wisconsin state legislators, Fitzgerald, who was state Senate majority leader at the time, re- served the room in the Wisconsin Capitol building in which the state’s 10 fake electors met to attempt to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election. He also claimed that election officials in Dane and Milwaukee counties allowed “hun- dreds of thousands of illegal votes to be cast and counted.” Fitzgerald won in 2020 and 2022 with Trump’s endorsement and expects it to help him again in 2024.
