CAFOs dominate livestock production in the U.S., producing a large majority of the country's meat, dairy and eggs. While only a small fraction of farms in the U.S. are CAFOs, it is estimated that around 99% of U.S. livestock is raised in them. These operations produce half of the nation's animal waste, contributing significantly environmental and public health concerns, including water and air pollution.
In Wisconsin, a CAFO generally refers to a livestock operation with 1,000 animal units, with animal units based on the weight of the animals, according to DHS. Wisconsin currently has 293 permitted CAFOs, 134 of which are in the northeast part of the state, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Of those, the majority are dairy, but the state also has hog, beef, chicken and turkey CAFOs.
Large-scale dairy farms produce over 60% of the nation's milk supply and are cheaper to run than smaller-scale farms. And other large-scale farms producing beef, turkey, pork and chicken are able to provide more affordable meat options to a larger number of people. [emphasis added]
Democrats in Congress are withholding their votes on a government spending bill to demand that Republicans extend these subsidies, which lower the cost of insurance for people who buy their own health care coverage in marketplaces established by the Affordable Care Act. Since Congress introduced the extra funding in 2021, enrollment has doubled.
These Americans live nearly everywhere in the country, but their numbers are especially concentrated in a handful of red states whose governments have declined to expand Medicaid programs to cover poor, childless adults.
Fifty-seven percent of people with this type of insurance live in Republican congressional districts.
Pekin Police said 47-year-old Michael S. Ritchason, a Pekin resident and Lead Pastor of Riverside Community Church, was arrested on Oct. 8 for allegedly disseminating harmful materials, which is a Class 4 Felony.
Ritchason is a former elementary school teacher and a former Pekin City councilman. Chief Seth Ranney said the police department was notified of evidence relating to that charge on Oct. 5.
Ranney did not provide any additional details.
There won’t be any bird shows in some parts of Wisconsin for the rest of the year. The state’s Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection issued a suspension order for all poultry shows in Jefferson, Waukesha, Walworth and Rock counties.
“All persons are prohibited from moving live domestic birds to, or participate in, any shows, exhibitions, swap meets, and other events in Jefferson, Waukesha, Walworth and Rock counties where domestic birds are brought together and then disperse,” DATCP said in its order.
The order comes after more than 3.5 million birds had to be culled in Jefferson County because of a bird flu outbreak there. [emphasis added]Related posts:
Speculation about Trump's Nobel chances
There had been persistent speculation ahead of the announcement about the possibility of the prize going to U.S. President Donald Trump, fueled in part by the president himself and amplified by this week's approval of his plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Asked about lobbying for and by Trump, Watne Frydnes said: "I think this committee has seen any type of campaign, media attention. We receive thousands and thousands of letters every year of people wanting to say what for them leads to peace.
"This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates, and that room is filled with both courage and integrity. So we base only our decision on the work and the will of Alfred Nobel."
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that the presence of HPAI was confirmed in a flock of 32,900 turkeys in Kandiyohi County on October 7, and on the following day, HPAI was confirmed in a flock of 72,500 turkeys in Becker County.
Including these two flocks, Minnesota has had 12 commercial poultry flocks struck by HPAI so far in 2025. [emphasis added]
