Gallagher told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he will leave Congress at the end of his current term to enter the private sector and spend more time with his young family. He said his future work will be in-line with his national security goals and focus on defense policy.
“I really just feel like I’ve accomplished much more than I even thought I could when I set out, and I firmly don’t believe that the best use for the next chapter of my career is staying in Congress for another decade,” Gallagher said in an interview.

Wisconsin State Senator Roger Roth (R-Appleton) is ready to run.

Last November, voters in Trumpy Iowa county choose to keep their public library independent

3rd party votes:  14.3% n 1992, 7.5% in 1996, 7.7% in 2016
(Alabama segregationist George Wallace
received 5.9% of the vote in 1968)

% of population 25 and older with bachelor's degree:
  • 31.7% - Marion County
  • 30.3% - Iowa
  • 34.3% - U.S.
% of population 65 and older:
  • 18.5% - Marion County
  • 18.5% - Iowa
  • 17.3% - U.S.
% of population living in poverty:
  •   8.1% - Marion County
  • 11.0% - Iowa
  • 11.5% - U.S.

About 51% of voters cast ballots against a measure to give City Hall officials oversight of the library's actions and budget, according to unofficial results. The non-binding referendum reached the ballot after some residents petitioned the library board to remove a graphic novel about gender fluidity, mirroring a national debate driven by conservatives over what books taxpayer-funded libraries should carry.
Just 87 votes separated the two sides, according to unofficial results.
"I feel the same way I did after I defended my doctoral dissertation," said Anne Petrie, a retired Central College professor of music and treasurer for the Vote NO To Save Our Library committee. "It's not euphoria. It's relief."

February 10, 2021

A few weeks ago, I decided it was time to transcribe some of the journal entries I wrote when Andy and Eddie were young. I started with a bound journal I purchased in 1994. From the approach I took, I must have expected this volume to be the inspiration I I needed to make these reflections a daily activity. I inscribed a title page and even used a matching color of ink. The seven entries, dated from October 7 to October 24, take up just 25 of the blank book’s 200 pages. Yet another failed effort.

One of the vignettes here resulted In a pleasant and sentimental trip down memory lane, one that set in motion a series of images involving parenting at that time. It’s worth sharing.

Sunday, October 9, 1994
As he’s been doing for most of his 7 years, Andy accompanied me to the grocery store this morning. He’s become quite the little helper on these excursions. Selecting the produce. Attaching the ties to the plastic bags. Inspecting the eggs. Hefting a gallon jug of milk into the cart. Bagging the groceries. He still lets me push the cart. \
Actually, over the past 6 months, most of my trips to the grocery store have been solo. I can even pinpoint the date: Mother’s Day 1994, when Andy rode his bike without training wheels for the first time. We let him ride around the block by himself. Within a week, he was not making a prompt reappearance. So began his friendship with Meaghan Stehr and more important things to do with his weekend time than tagging along with Dad through the aisles of Cub Foods, even with the promised reward of a bag of Skittles for good behavior.
Andy has always been good company on these errands, which were probably a regular occurrence in his life by his first birthday. During his 2’s, I used the book The Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmes to teach him lessons on moderation, i.e., you can’t always get what you want.
No, Andy, we’re not going to buy Fruit Roll-ups this time.
The more things change, the more they remain the same. Twenty-eight years later, Andy and I are still making trips to the store together. Under very different circumstances.

During the pandemic, Andy and I make regular Saturday morning trips to Knoche’s meat market. With menu planning having become a key part of our family life, we stock up on the items we need for the coming week’s dinners. We also take advantage of certain items that always seem to be on sale: bone-in/skin-on chicken breasts (as low as $1.99/lb.) and pork spare ribs ($2.59/lb. – it’s one of Andy’s specialties) are two of our staples, especially now that JoAnna is limiting her intake of beef.

These Saturday morning excursions sometimes includes at Brennan’s Market, where we buy most of our produce. During our drive-time, the car radio is tuned to SIRIUS XM 70s on 7, as we listen to the latest rebroadcast of Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40”.

Andy is still good company after all these years.

Texas GOP hypocrisy in full flower

Top headline The Guardian, 7/29/2023
Bottom headlineThe Texas Tribune, 2/9/2024

From The Guardian:
The message was blunt: “Texas will see you in court, Mr. President.”
The words of defiance came from Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, making clear that he would not comply with a justice department request to remove floating barriers in the Rio Grande. And Abbott is not the only Republican governor in open revolt against Washington.

GET ME REWRITE: MAGA Queen Janel Brandtjen's election denier hysteria reaches highest vocal range

HeadlineWisBusiness, 2/9/2024
“This Tuesday, February 13, once again represents the first business day of the month, and according to Assembly Rules, a resolution can be pulled to the floor for a vote. I will once again try to get a floor vote on AR 18 to start an impeachment investigation into WEC administrator Meagan Wolfe.
The impeachment action was requested by Senate President Kapenga on October 4, 2023, due to a lack of consistency from Wolfe and staff members when carrying out election laws. I believe Wolfe and her staff have created the greatest threat to our Constitutional Republic by disregarding existing election laws.
