Dead skunk in Pueblo Colorado tests positive for bird flu

Headline:  Pueblo Chieftain, 2/12/2026

A skunk found dead near the Arkansas River and Pueblo Boulevard tested positive for bird flu and the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment (PDPHE) is urging people to avoid wildlife and protect their pets and livestock.
“Avian influenza A viruses usually spread between birds, not people,” Scott Cowan, a PDPHE program manager, said in a news release. “Humans rarely get avian influenza, but when they do, it's usually through direct contact with infected birds or other infected animals.”
According to PDPHE, exposure to infected, sick, or dead animals is the main risk factor for contracting avian influenza, but exposure to contaminated surfaces is also a risk.
