It was called Beaty Junior High School when I attended.

On the banks of Conewango, just above the dam.
Stands the Beaty Junior High School, stately and so grand.
True to Beaty, we will ever loudly sing her praise.
Hail, to Beaty Junior High Schoo, hail to thee always.

Here's how it works.

Four sessions on navigating state's first 'Diverging Diamond Interchange'.  (Madison.com, 8/31/2016)
The interchange design shifts traffic to the opposite side of the road at traffic signals to ease the traffice flow and left turns onto the interstate, a DOT spokesman said.

Florida U.S. Senate Democratic primary: Kudos to these polls

Retiring Guy proclaims sarcastically.

Why even bother?

The original Ron Burgundy defers to his colleague

Photos by Retiring Guy (September 1980)

From the spring of 1974 through the summer of 1983, I didn't own a television. By choice.

But when I visited my parents in Warren PA, I wasn't above stretching out on the living room floor during the late evening, as if I were back in high school after hanging out with friends. In both cases, my primary goal was to catch a rerun of The Honeymooners on WPIX

During a September 1980 visit, I set up my camera on a tripod and snapped an occasional photo, such as the 'action' portrait, above, of the News at 11 anchors on WIVB-TV in Buffalo, New York.

Or this one of Moe getting a faceful of water. (Unfortunately, I can't find The Honeymooners shots. I think I may have tossed those slides without scanning them, not realizing there was a blog post in store.)

Or stills from this bizarre Chock-Full-of-Nuts coffee commercial, featuring Bert Parks and Page Morton Black.

As shown in this partial schedule from the 4/29/1968 Warren Times Observer, the 3 New York City independent TV stations -- WNEW (5) WOR (9), WPIX (11) -- were available via the wonders of .....

People driving north to south on U.S. 63 or east to west on U.S. 2 are forced to use long detours, taking them hours out of the way in some cases. Flooding Strands Residents, Cut Off Access In Northern Wisconsin.  (Wisconsin Public Radio, 7/14/2016)
"Viable ways" = "hours out of their way".  People driving north to south on U.S. 63 or east to west on U.S. 2 are forced to use long detours, taking them hours out of the way in some cases. Bayfield County tourism director Mary Motiff said it’s not what they’d like to see during their busiest season of the year. She said some businesses rely solely on income from summer tourists to make it through the rest of the year.

In many cases, it took a month -- 4 precious weeks out of northern Wisconsin's summer tourism season -- for roads to reopen.

And when it comes to keeping pace with basic road maintenance, Walker, in his 6th year as Governor, continues to offer no viable solutions.

Public libraries in the 34th Assembly District

Academic library
Richard J. Brown Library, Nicolet College, Rhinelander

The 34th District is an open seat.

Rep. Dan Meyer will not seek re-election to another term.  (Lakeland Times, 2/3/2012)

Excerpt: In a press released issued early Friday evening, Meyer said his 12 years of service have been "very rewarding and humbling, but that it's time to move on, I never wanted to be a career politician," Meyer added, "12 years seems like a good term limit to impose on myself.

The Republican Candidates

Rob Swearingen

Swearingen to run for State Assembly.  (Lakeland Times, 4/17/2012)

Excerpt:  Swearingen, along with his wife Amy, are the longtime owner/operators of The Al-Gen Dinner Club  [the interior of which very much resembles the White Stag, which apparently is not the place it used to be]. With nearly two decades of experience running a small business, Swearingen knows what it takes to balance a budget, how to create jobs and what needs to be done to further economic development in the region.

"Northern Wisconsin is not only a good place to live and work, but it is also a premiere vacation destination," explained Swearingen. "Because the lifeblood of the economy in the North woods is tied to tourism, the State needs to do all it can to promote this vital industry."

Wisconsin Eye interview.

Alex Young

Young to run for 34th Assembly District.  (Lakeland Times, 2/10/2012)

Excerpt:  Nearly eight years ago, it took only 10 write-in votes for Alex Young to be elected to the vacant sixth district seat on the Rhinelander City Council.

Now the current city council president is entering a much larger political ring. A few days after Rep. Dan Meyer announced he would not be seeking re-election in the fall for a seventh straight term representing the state's 34th Assembly District, Young officially announced his candidacy for the position.

The Democratic Candidates

Roberta Retrum

Roberta Retrum announces candidacy for 34th District.  (PolitiScoop, 2/17/2012)

Excerpt: Roberta, a native of Wisconsin, retired to the Eagle River area four years ago. She holds an Associate Degree in Accounting and will bring this skill and knowledge to the 34th District in drafting and approving the State Budget.

Roberta is new to the political scene. She said the actions of Governor Walker, last February, shocked her into realizing what can go wrong in the State for the average citizen if dedicated people like herself didn't act as watchdogs to safeguard an open and transparent government.

Merlin Van Buren

Van Buren enters 34th State Assembly District race.  (Lakeland Times, 3/27/2012)

Excerpt:    Van Buren has served on the School District of Rhinelander's board for the last year, and said education will be an important issue in his campaign.

Gov. Scott Walker needs to do right by Milwaukee.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 1/6/2015)
But here's the problem: Under Walker, Wisconsin has become one of America's most polarized states, so while more of the same may be good for a bare majority of the people who voted during the last election, Walker should not ignore the 48% of the voters who did not support him.

"Then they were giving George Brett a hard time because he had a slow start that year, so they told him, 'Hey, man, you're going to sink down below the Mendoza Line if you're not careful.' And then Brett mentioned it to Chris Berman from ESPN, and eventually it spread and became a part of the game."

But Trump trails among Catholics by a huge margin. A new poll from the Public Religion Research Institute released this week shows him down 23 points, 55-32.
