Hot enough for ya? Too hot for some residents of Phoenix!

Headline:  Merced Sun-Star, 10/29/2026
Every summer, millions of residents in the Valley suffer through the scorching heat, broiling in some of the highest temperatures anywhere in the country. But thousands of people like Martin have few options for ducking it. These are people who have no stable home, work outdoors, lack indoor cooling or have health conditions that make them especially vulnerable to heat's hazards.
Maricopa County's annual heat report, while still being finalized, reveals a worrisome milestone: The region is on track to set a new high in the number of heat deaths. Part of the reason is the record-breaking temperatures, but the result also reflects the policy gaps in protecting those most at risk.
Already the region has recorded 462 heat-related deaths, more than the total of 430 deaths last year. Another 285 deaths are still under investigation.  [emphasis added]
