USA box office on the 11th weekend of 2017-2025

USA box office on the 10th weekend of 2025 is down 42% compared to last year when "Kung Fu Panda" was the top-grossing movie.  "Novocaine" is the top-grossing film this weekend.

And it's down a whopping 82% compared to the peak year of 2017, when "Beauty and the Beast" ruled the box office.

Variety, 3/16/2025
Despite five new nationwide releases, this weekend was among the year’s lowest grossing to date with $52 million across all films, according to Comscore. Even the Super Bowl frame, known to leave multiplexes barren, was bigger with $54 million in February. The year’s sluggish first quarter has been another blow to the badly bruised movie theater business, which is banking on 2025 to revive the business after COVID and Hollywood’s labor strikes. If that’s the case, there’s no time like the present. Year-to-date revenues are 5% behind 2024 and nearly 38% behind 2019, according to Comscore.

Savannah spent a few uneventful decades on the baby names chart in the early 20th century, finally dropping off for a long stretch in 1932.  She jumped back into the fray in 1983, and after a minor setback, vaulted into the top 100, where she has resided since 1993.

Circular logic of one-man clown show Drunk Van Orden

Headline:  Up North News email news aleert
Elon Musk’s wrecking crew, nicknamed DOGE, has cost more than 100,000 Americans their jobs, many of them vital to security, health, and economic stability. But don’t try telling that to Congressman Derrick Van Orden. He’ll tell you DOGE hasn’t fired anyone.
“It had nothing to do with DOGE,” he said with a straight face during a tele-town hall. “All the people that you’ve heard about being released from different agencies, that was on the agency itself.”
    Oh.
And yet, for those who were fired by their agency (and totally not DOGE 😉) and who felt their termination was unjustified, Van Orden was quick to offer advice on who to call for help.
    DOGE, of course!
“Get ahold of the DOGE folks directly or through us,” he said, “and we’ll help try to rectify that.”
Who knew a junior congressman from western Wisconsin had Elon Musk’s personal phone number.

In other words, Drunk sez DOGE had nothing to do with the firings, but if you've been fired, DOGE is the one to undo it.

What an embarrassment not just to his constituents in the gerrymandered 3rd congressional district but to the entire State of Wisconsin.

What’s the matter with Iowa? Taking away civil rights from a vulnerable population (transphobia edition)

    Headline:  Des Moines Register, 3/12/2025

    Marissa Payne reports:
Pleading with her Iowa House colleagues last month to reject a bill stripping away protections against discrimination for transgender Iowans like herself, Rep. Aime Wichtendahl asked lawmakers if they had ever faced the humiliation of losing their homes.
“Have you ever had to look into your 3-year-old's eyes and explain to him why you don't have a house anymore, to have to explain to him why you're now living with strangers and what happened to his room and all his toys?” Wichtendahl, Iowa’s first publicly trans state lawmaker, asked during an emotional speech on the House floor. “Have you ever had to do that? Because I have."
The same week Wichtendahl transitioned at work, her property management company told her she had 30 days to vacate, though she had always paid her rent on time and the next-door unit had sat vacant for six months.
