Campbell Robertson and Zach Montague report:
Facing a lawsuit and pointed questions from a federal judge, the Trump administration agreed on Friday to pull back its attempt to take direct control over the District of Columbia police department by installing a Trump administration official to run the agency.
The legal fight, which prompted an emergency court hearing on Friday afternoon, was the most contentious episode since the Trump administration announced on Monday that it was placing the city’s police department under “federal control.” The retreat by Justice Department officials represented a significant, if narrow, victory for the city’s government as it contends with the federal intervention[emphasis added]

GET ME REWRITE: The Billy Long IRS Clown Show closes after 53 dismal days

Headline:  New York Times, 8/8/2025

Andrew Duehren and Maggie Haberman report:
As members of his family and close aides from his time in Congress looked on, he was put in charge of one of the federal government’s most visible and fundamental agencies, responsible for collecting roughly $5 trillion in tax revenue each year. By all appearances, Mr. Long had the full support of the president, who had also invited him to a private lunch that day and structured the July 18 swearing-in around it.
But within days, Mr. Long began to lose his grip on a job that he had held for barely a month. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had already ousted one White House-installed I.R.S. commissioner this year. He would soon orchestrate the removal of another, culminating in the agency having its seventh leader since January[emphasis added]

GET ME REWRITE: 6 conservative Supreme Court justices complete their move into West Wing of White House

Jeffrey M. Jones and Sarah Hogenboom-Jones report:
Seventy-five percent of Republicans versus 11% of Democrats approve of the job the Supreme Court is doing, according to a July 7-21 poll. This 64-percentage-point party gap exceeds the prior high of 61 points, recorded after the high court overturned Roe v. Wade in its 2022 Dobbs ruling.

Half of the 10 largest partisan gaps in Supreme Court approval have come after the Dobbs decision, handed down by a solid 6-3 conservative majority on the court. During this time, the court has earned high marks from Republicans and very low marks from Democrats.

Complicated?  On average, a 3-bedroom apartment will set you back nearly $7,000 a month, or $84,000.  That's 60% of $142,000.

Earning $142,000 in NYC doesn't make you anywhere near rich.

MISCREANT PREACHERS: Child solicitation in the Name of the Lord (#161 in a series)

Photo and headline:  WRAL Raleigh, 8/14/2025

Shaun Gallagher reports:
A warrant issued for 30-year-old Shelton Burkart alleged that on June 24, 2024, he “knowingly” possessed visual material of children, ages 8 to 12, naked in dressing rooms and engaging in sexual activity.
While Burkart is living in and charged in Warren County, the warrant was issued from the State Bureau of Investigation Computer Crimes Unit in Raleigh. It is not clear from the warrant how SBI knew to find and charge Burkart.
He’s been charged with five felony counts each of second degree- and third degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
According to the North Carolina SBI, Burkart is a pastor at Zion Global Methodist Church in Norlina.

"Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."  (Colossians 3:5)

Strongman Aleksandr Lukashenko, President of Belarus: No wonder Trump likes this guy!

Headline:  New York Times, 8/15/2025

Ivan Nechepurenko reports:
Mr. Lukashenko took power in 1994 and has won seven increasingly dubious elections, most recently in January. Over this time, Western policymakers have veered between isolating the strongman ruler and cooperating with him. A master at silencing dissent at home, Mr. Lukashenko, leading a country with just 9 million people, over and over has successfully danced between Russia and the West, often pitting the two against each other.  [emphasis added]

Molly Beck reports:
Whitefish Bay manufacturing CEO Bill Berrien says he supports eliminating state permit requirements for firearm owners who want to carry guns in a concealed fashion, a policy known to supporters as constitutional carry
"I believe that every American is granted a carry permit and that's in the form of the Second Amendment, and I think we need to get back to personal responsibility, freedom, and this focus on constitutional carry is one of those examples," Berrien told conservative radio host Jay Weber on Aug. 5.

Mr. Businessman is getting down to business on constitutional carry.

Headline:  Des Moines Register, 8/14/2025

Nick El Hajj reports:
When asked Thursday whether he agrees with the EPA’s move, Republican U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn, whose 3rd Congressional District includes Des Moines, deferred to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin.
“I think one of the things I want to make sure is that we're not putting onerous D.C.-level red tape on folks who are trying to do the upgrades on this," Nunn said. "I've worked with the Des Moines Water Works a lot on this. They feel like they've got a plan to help tackle it. I want to take an Iowa solution back to Washington, D.C., not have D.C. put more regulations on communities across the country in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. We know that doesn't work.”  [emphasis added]

Climate change as a matter of fact (Juneau Alaska edition)

Raymond Zhong reports:
Such floods have been a recurring problem in Juneau since 2011, but recent years have seen record-setting surges as rising temperatures cause glaciers in the area to melt more rapidly. Alaska has warmed faster than the global average, and the fastest of any state, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. ]emphasis added]
Flooding last August from the same glacial lake inundated several hundred homes in Juneau with four to six feet of water, although no deaths or injuries were reported. The city put up a temporary levee along the river in response. Residents this week were urged to evacuate ahead of the latest round of high water.

Jonathan V. Last shares an excerpt from the Washington Post:
The only health clinic here is shutting down, and the hospital CEO has blamed Medicaid cuts in President Donald Trump’s signature legislation. But residents of Curtis—a one-stoplight town in deep-red farm country—aren’t buying that explanation.
Anyone who’s saying that Medicaid cuts is why they’re closing is a liar,” April Roberts said, as she oversaw lunch at the Curtis Area Senior Center.
The retirees trickling in for fried chicken and soft-serve ice cream will be hit hardest when the clinic closes this fall, Roberts fears. Seniors who sometimes go in multiple times a month to have blood drawn will have to drive 40 miles to the next nearest health center. Sick people, she worries, will put off checkups and get sicker.
Arriving for lunch, retired Navy veteran Jim Christensen said he’d read an op-ed that “tried to blame everything on Trump.”
"Horse feathers,” he said, dismissing the idea.
