Today you'll encounter a detour as you approach the Green River Tunnel in I-80 in Wyoming

Headline:  Cowboy State Daily, 2/14/2025
Green River Fire Chief Bill Robinson said he wasn’t ready to discuss the situation as of 2:30 p.m., except to note the tunnel would be closed indefinitely and that “it’s going to be days before we can work through all this stuff that’s going on.” Tires on vehicles at the scene are exploding due to the heat, the Wyoming Highway Patrol announced Friday.

In case you're wondering...

Keeping tabs on authors in LINKcat: Christopher Jencks

New York Times, 2/12/2025

Clay Risen writes:
Mr. Jencks had an unconventional background for an academic social scientist: He had an undergraduate degree in English literature, followed by a stint as an opinion journalist, and despite holding an endowed chair in sociology at Harvard, he never earned a doctorate.
If anything, that background seemed to help him. In books and articles, he wrote clear, concise sentences backed by finely honed data, presenting arguments that cut to the quick of policy debates, often in novel ways that defied traditional left-right divisions.

But in terms of relative contributions, specifically agriculture’s contribution as a share of the total county’s economy, some of the most rural counties are most dependent upon agriculture including Lafayette, Taylor and Trempealeau.  [emphasis added]

Day 23,729 of Chuck Grassley as an elected official. What has he done for Iowa lately?

HeadlineKIWA, 2/14/2025
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he has no issue with the Trump administration firing FBI agents and Department of Justice personnel who were key in prosecuting those who were involved in the January 6th US Capitol riots.
Those in leadership positions at the FBI and DOJ can be transferred or fired, Grassley says, but those who were just following orders from their supervisors perhaps should be spared.

Backyard poultry doesn't mean your chickens are immune from bird flu

Screengrab:  WTOL

Troy Gingerich writes:
Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has been identified in a "small backyard flock of birds" in Monroe County, according to the health department
The health department says no human illness has been identified and everyone potentially exposed to the birds has been contacted. According to the health department, it's the first case of the virus in the county since the state's first detection in 2022.
“We want to share this information to alert residents who own or work with birds, including poultry, to the possibility of infection and to take necessary precautions,” Jamie Dean, health officer, director at the Monroe County Health Department. “Keeping the public informed, safe, and healthy is our top priority.”

Chickens and eggs: Layers bear the brunt of the bird flu slaughter while broilers get off easy

It's all about the life cycle.

Headline:  KFOR, 2/14/2025

The numbers:
  • 147,000,000:  number of chickens infected and depopulated by bird flu during the past 3 years
  • 110,250,000 (75%):  number of layers infected
  • 13,000,000 (9%):  number of broilers infected
  • 0.0005%:  percentage of infected broilers compared to total production.  That's a hell of a lot of broilers.

9.15 billion in 2023.

So why do broilers have a better survival rate?.

A shorter life cycle.

They are typically slaughtered within two months, whereas layers don't start producing until they are 4 or 5 months old and their egg-laying cycle can last for a year.
