Bird flu ravages marine mammals, raising alarm around the world

Back in 1996, a strain of bird flu showed up on a poultry farm in Asia. It didn’t look like a global threat at the time.
Fast forward 30 years, and that same virus, H5N1, has spread across nearly the entire world. It has infected more than 400 million poultry and reached far beyond birds.
The virus has crossed into wild animals in ways that few expected. Marine mammals are now part of the story.
In parts of South America, the damage is already severe. Outbreaks have killed at least 36,000 South American sea lions, 17,400 southern elephant seals, and 1,000 South American fur seals. [emphasis added]
These are not small losses. They affect entire colonies and can shift ecosystems along coastlines. This is not just about one region.
The bird flu virus has shown it can move between species and across large distances. That makes it harder to predict and even harder to control.
