But during the high-profile visit to the detention center by President Donald Trump and other elected leaders, the state’s executive director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Kevin Guthrie, told reporters they have a hurricane plan if the situation arises.

It isn’t just that Trump has ramped up his own personal self-dealing (though he most certainly has), or that his administration is tolerant of conflicts of interest in other officials (though it is). Just as important, Trump is enacting a sweeping set of policy changes that will make it more likely that Americans will themselves be the victims of all kinds of scams.

Francier Obando Pinillo, the owner and pastor of Tiempo de Poder Church in Pasco, is accused of contacting alleged victims in the case and of fraudulently soliciting funds for a fake orphanage through Facebook, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy Kelley in Eastern Washington. 
Both violate the terms of his release from jail pending the outcome of the case or give suspicion that he violated federal law, prosecutors argued Tuesday at a hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge James Goeke at the U.S. Courthouse in Richland. 
Pinillo pleaded innocent in January to wire fraud after being accused of collecting $5.9 million from church members and others promised risk-free cryptocurrency investments.

Now, a perspective piece authored by a group of virologists, veterinarians and health security experts argues that the plan would not only be ineffective, but could also increase the risk of the virus spilling over into humans and sparking a new pandemic. The researchers published their arguments July 3 in the journal Science.  
"Essentially, the longer you allow a virus that has shown to be effective in infecting multiple hosts survive in an environment, the greater the chance you give it to spread, to mutate, and to try its luck at adaptation," perspective first-author Erin Sorrell, a virologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Live Science. "Worse case scenario, the virus adapts and expands its host range to become transmissible in humans … Now we have a pandemic."

In the letter that prompted today’s action, which was sent on Monday to Lee Zeldin, the E.P.A. administrator, the employees voiced concern that the agency had made decisions based on a political agenda, not on science and the law. 
Recent E.P.A. news releases and newsletters have echoed some of President Trump’s comments on the environment, the letter said, citing agency statements describing coal as “beautiful” and “clean.” Coal is the dirtiest of the fossil fuels and is a significant source of greenhouse gases.  [emphasis added]
