Already this month, the presence of the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus serotype has been detected on 36 poultry farms in Poland, according to the national chief veterinary inspectorate (as of April 20).
A wide range of poultry have been infected, particularly meat turkeys, but also breeding chickens, ducks and geese, laying hens, broilers and meat ducks. Individual flocks hit by the virus over this period ranged from 1,150 breeding ducks to more than 340,000 broiler chickens. Recording the most of these latest outbreaks have been the central-eastern province of Masovia, but recent cases have also been reported in adjacent Warmia-Masuria, Greater Poland, Kuyavia-Pomerania, and Lublin.
