Nathan Willison reports:
Bird flu has now been reported in seven commercial poultry flocks in Lancaster County, affecting over 2.4 million birds as the number of affected flocks continues to rise.
In the latest outbreak, reported Feb. 11 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the disease was found among a commercial table egg layer flock, affecting over 104,800 birds. It has also been reported among commercial broiler and turkey flocks. No active outbreaks among domestic birds have been reported in other Pennsylvania counties.
While health experts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that the disease poses little risk to public health for the time being, it is almost always fatal to domestic poultry and is highly infectious. Since 2024, the CDC has reported 71 human cases and two deaths caused by bird flu.
