Latest bird flu wrinkle: H5N1 in bull semen

Headline:  Weekly Times, 4/30/2026

Peter Hunt reports:
US researchers are investigating whether the H5N1 avian influenza can be spread to dairy herds via artificial insemination, after detecting viral RNA in the semen of a bull that showed no symptoms of the disease.
The research team, led by Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory chief virologist Ailam Lim, found “shedding of HPAI H5N1 in bovine semen could result in silent viral spread within herds and across geographic regions through artificial insemination”. In their May 2026 Emerging Infectious Diseases report, the team said they sampled three bulls from a 4500-head Holstein dairy herd in California, where infection was initially confirmed in cows from milk vat samples.
