The popularity of Joseph as a baby name, still charting in the 20-30 range, is graphed here.  Let's take a look at Rosemarie.

\
Rosemarie debuted in 1908, fell off the chart for a year, then after a few false starts rocketed her way into the top 200.  And that was about it.  She spent 12 years in this category (1931, 1933, 1935-44), peaking at #156 in 1936.

John Barasso and his buddies are big wusses
The new administration is quickly demonstrating that it does not intend to be bound by legal niceties or traditional checks and balances in its relationship with Congress. That has alarmed Democrats but drawn shrugs and approval from Republicans, who say that Mr. Trump is delivering what he promised even if it comes at the expense of Congress’s authority and constitutional status as a coequal branch of government.
“President Trump clearly ran for office to be a disrupter, and he’s going to continue to do that,” said Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, the No. 2 Republican.

Trump gave us one answer last week when he revoked a 60-year-old nondiscrimination order and shut down civil rights enforcement at the Justice Department. He gave us another when he issued an executive order mandating “patriotic education” and taking aim at any teaching that dwells on this country’s troubled history of racial hierarchy and subordination. He gave us another answer on Wednesday when Secretary Hegseth paused military recognition of Black History Month as part of his effort to uproot D.E.I. and show that “diversity is not our strength.” And Trump gave us one more, during a Thursday news conference, when both he and Vice President Vance blamed diversity for the midair collision near Washington National Airport that claimed 67 lives the night before.

Pam Belluck and Emily Cochrane write:
The charges mark a new chapter in an escalating showdown between states that ban abortion and those that want to protect and expand access to it. It is challenging one of the foremost strategies used by states that support abortion rights: shield laws intended to provide legal protection to doctors who prescribe and send abortion pills to states with bans.
The charges were brought against Dr. Margaret Carpenter, who was operating under New York’s telemedicine abortion shield law, which stipulates that New York authorities will not cooperate with prosecutions or other legal actions filed against New York abortion providers by other states.

Meet Robin Vos: General in the Wisconsin GOP War on Women

Headline:  Wisconsin Examiner, 1/31/2025

Despite widespread support, the bill will face a challenge in becoming law this session due to opposition from Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester). During a press conference in early January, he said it was “unlikely” that the proposal would become law this session.
“Our caucus has taken a position that expanding welfare is not a wise idea for anyone involved,” Vos said.
Snyder said he’s heard “rumors” that Vos may assign the bill to the Assembly State Affairs Committee. “I hope he doesn’t because a lot of times that’s where bills go to die,” he said.

GET ME REWRITE: First Felon Donald Trump puts us all in danger by handcuffing the CDC

Sierra Krug writes:
“What we need to have happening right now is — [the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)] working closely with state and local health departments and agricultural departments to do good monitoring about what’s going on in wild bird populations [and] in cattle,” Jackson said. “Collecting information about human cases, as well, and then disseminating that information to the broader community.”
It’s basic supply and demand — each time bird flu is traced to any bird, the entire flock has to be killed, which effectively minimizes the country’s poultry supply and therefore shoots those egg prices up.
Jackson said this isn’t unexpected, but that if we do start to see the virus spreading human-to-human, that would be a major red flag and indicative of a potential pandemic. However, again, the U.S. is not at that point yet.
However, as the outbreaks continue to grow, President Donald Trump’s administration put a pause on communication from health agencies like the CDC. Part of this halt means reports on related research are on hold. [emphasis added]

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt hits peak on bullshit meter

Headline:  Washington Post, 1/29/2025
Let’s start with why the U.S. government distributes condoms overseas: It’s to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. [emphasis added]
[snip]
Indeed, according to the report, spending $50 million on condoms for an entity roughly double the size of Washington would be a huge increase in condom spending. From fiscal 2016 to 2022, USAID spent $118.6 million to buy 3.6 billion male condoms for 60 countries. That’s an average of $17 million a year for the entire world — one-third of the amount Leavitt said would be spent just on Gaza. (USAID also distributes female condoms, but that’s a small fraction of the spending.)
