The popularity of John as a baby name was previously graphed here in 2025.  Let's take a look at Miles.

Miles registered a middling level of popularity throughout the 20th century.  Since the 1990s, however, an increasing number of parents have taken a liking to the name.  As a result, it has placed in the top 100 since 2018.  Best year so far:  2024 at #37.

Australian bird flu news: Kangaroo Island residents worry about spread of virus

Headline:  ABC News Australia, 8/21/2026

Daniel Keane reports:
Kangaroo Island locals on the frontline against bird flu are fearful of further devastation, with the mayor saying he is "sick of bloody disasters".
It was yesterday revealed that three mass bird deaths believed to be linked to H5N1 and involving more than 1,000 crested terns had occurred on remote SA islands — including two off KI.
A suspected case involving a little penguin found on D'Estrees Bay on the island's southern coastline is also being investigated.
"It was distressing and it really gets us worried over here about where this is all going — terribly distressing for the community," Kangaroo Island Mayor Michael Pengilly said of the mass mortalities.

New Zealand reports 3rd case of bird flu

Headline:  Avian Flu Diary, 8/21/2026

Michael Coston reports:
It has been just over a month since New Zealand reported their second H5N1 detection in a local bird (a swamp harrier hawk) found in the sparsely populated Wairarapa region on the north island (see map above).
Today, New Zealand has confirmed a 3rd detection - this time in a northern giant petrel, found dead on a remote Cape Palliser beach (also in the Wairarapa).
While it is likely there are other, as-yet undetected cases in New Zealand, they don't appear to have seen the same level of influx that Australia has had to deal with. How long that will last is anyone's guess.

Hot enough for ya? Extreme heat is killing England's oldest trees

Photos:  Facebook
Headline: New York Times, 8/21/2026

The tree is thought to be one of up to 3,500 ancient oaks in England that are more than 600 years old. Many of these trees, which hold a significant place in English history, culture and imagination, have been suffering in sweltering temperatures and consecutive years of drought, according to Ed Pyne, a conservation adviser at the nonprofit Woodland Trust.
The threat was underscored in June when the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest, perhaps the most famous tree in the country, estimated at 800 to 1,200 years old, died. Conservationists cited a combination of factors, including climate change and over-tourism.
Dr. Pyne said that the demise of the Major Oak was not unique: England is losing one or two such trees a year.
“Losing trees of that caliber is something that’s just going to increase and increase as we go on,” he said.

MISCREANT PREACHERS: Grooming of a minor in the Name of the Lord (#376 in a series)

Mugshot and headline:  WNKY, 8/20/2026

WNKY staff report:
According to a uniform citation, on Aug. 17, the Cadiz Police Department received a report regarding multiple incidents of inappropriate physical contact involving an adult male and a minor.
Authorities say they were told that during prior incidents, 38-year-old Jeremiah Swaw of Cadiz allegedly made inappropriate physical contact with a minor victim.
According to the citation, Swaw arrived at the police department and admitted to inappropriate physical contact with the minor victim on several occasions but denied the majority of sexual contact allegations.
Authorities confirmed in the citation that Swaw was an “adult religious leader.”

"But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear."  (Isaiah 59:2)
