CES 2018 preview/CES 2017 review: Keratase Hair Coach

CES 2018 preview: The smart home gets smarter.  (CNET, 12/22/2017)
A smart hairbush called the Kerastase Hair Coach was on display at CES 2017. Its proposed goal? To collect data as you brush your hair via integrated sensors and give you related care recommendations.

Plus, why would you buy a hairbrush for around $200 when you can get a basic one for $10 and then just look up ways to keep your hair healthy?

Let's put this Foxconn deposit in perspective

$60,000,000 is 1.5% of the $3,938,000,000 (and counting) payments and incentives promised to Foxconn.

Skin in the game: Foxconn makes $60 million deposit on what officials call 'historic day'.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 12/22/2017)

Most of the actions already taken involes securing sizeable payments and incentives from state, county, and local governments Foxconn, which has drawn criticism over announced projects elsewhere that didn't fully materialize, already has taken several actions indicating it is indeed serious about its plans to build the massive factory here.

Climate change as a matter of fact: Rising seas + draining underground aquifers = Jakarta disaster

Jakarta Is Sinking So Fast, It Could End Up Underwater.  (The New York Times, 12/21/2017)
In fact, Jakarta is sinking faster than any other big city on the planet, faster, even, than climate change is causing the sea to rise — so surreally fast that rivers sometimes flow upstream, ordinary rains regularly swamp neighborhoods and buildings slowly disappear underground, swallowed by the earth. The main cause: Jakartans are digging illegal wells, drip by drip draining the underground aquifers on which the city rests — like deflating a giant cushion underneath it. About 40 percent of Jakarta now lies below sea level.

Merry Christmas!! GOP Assembly Speaker Robin Vos echoes Corrections Secretary's call for more prison space

Guess that recent bump in prison incarceration rates isn't big enough for them.

Vos:  Wisconsin Probably Needs New Prison.  (Wisconsin Public Radio, 12/20/2017

Wherein it's reported...

2017 Assembly Bill 642 fuels the need for more prison cells.

And the cluster of sponsors is just where you'd expect to find them, in the most white "Collar Counties"

Note:  Only Rep. Skowronski (R-Franklin) lives in Milwaukee County.  Reps. Hutton, Sanfelippo, and Kooyenga live in Waukesha County but have western portions of Milwaukee County in their district.  Rep. Ott lives in Ozaukee County but represents a portion of northeast Milwaukee County.  In other words, the outline of Milwaukee County should show more white space, but I ran out of room applying red dots.

Acquisition Signals Hope For the Future Of U.S. Malls (print headline).  (The New York Times, 12/12/2017)
With the rise of Amazon and other online shopping options, consumers have skipped treks to the sprawling malls that dot the American landscape, preferring to click-and-shop from the comfort of home. Struggling to adapt, the stores that once lined the interiors of malls, from RadioShack to The Limited, filed for bankruptcy. Then, department store giants like Sears, J. C. Penney and others — long the reliable anchors of malls everywhere — began shuttering properties at a fast and furious pace.

Vanity Fair has just published a lengthy and wide-ranging profile of the former Trump campaign CEO and former Trump White House chief strategist. It reveals a tragic figure whose sense of self is far greater than most Americans probably think. In other words, it reveals Steve Bannon as we already know him. A blowhard. Meet GOP Iowa governor Kim Reynolds, NRA tool

The Iowa Firearms Coalition is an NRA affiliate.

Limits on guns in childcare centers are blocked by governor's staff.  (Des Moines Register, 12/19/2017)
Yeah, blame it on your staff, KimUnlike most other states, Iowa has no regulations regarding firearms in childcare centers. Mark Anderson, chairman of the Department of Human Services' advisory council, said the proposal seemed like common sense. “It just says you can’t have loaded, unsecured weapons when you’re watching other people’s children,” he said in an interview.
But Gov. Kim Reynolds contends the proposal needs more discussion. She told reporters Tuesday that it might be better to have legislators debate the matter instead of letting administrators use their authority to implement rules on it.

From U.S. Customs and Border Protection
Customs Duty is a tariff or tax imposed on goods when transported across international borders. The purpose of Customs Duty is to protect each country's economy, residents, jobs, environment, etc., by controlling the flow of goods, especially restrictive and prohibited goods, into and out of the country.

But not if reduced custom duties allows Foxconn to purchase supplies more cheaply overseas, eh?
