Food fight! Bacon, pit ham, and Veg News

The Pinney Branch of the Madison Public Library is the only LINKcat location that subscribes to Veg News.

As you can probably guess, I wasn't at the Pinney Branch at the time I took this photo.  I unexpectedly found myself having plenty of time on my hands, as the woman in line ahead of me didn't have her Willy Street Food Coop membership card handy and couldn't remember her number.  In general, she seemed to have difficulty interacting with the cashier.

Dear families and friends of victims of gun violence. The loss of your loved ones falls under the heading of 'stuff happens', according to Jeb Bush.

As quoted in Obama Rebukes Bush on ‘Stuff Happens’ Reaction to Oregon Shootings.  (The New York Times, 10/2/2015)
The exchange between Mr. Obama and Mr. Bush reflected the paralysis that has settled over the issue of new gun control legislation in the United States. Virtually no member of Congress issued a statement after the Oregon shootings arguing for or against new gun control measures, and a number of the 2016 Republican presidential candidates were dismissive of new gun control measures as well.

Actually, Scott, there's another, more important constant.

The whole world's watching.

Here's what can happen when you clean out your junk drawers

My ongoing drawer reorganization has resulted in a number of benefits, such as less clutter and easier retrieval.

We can quickly, at a glance, determine the contents of a particular drawer. In addition, I have eliminated the need for anyone to utter the lament, "I can't find a nail clipper." While sorting through all of the stuff in our two junkiest kitchen drawers, I uncovered 7 -- count 'em -- 7 clippers of various sizes.

Not to mention a bunch of nail files. Bonus round!

As Carole King will attest, I'm a bad boy

Received this overdue notice yesterday.

I remember seeing this book on the floor of the car behind the front passenger's seat, I reminded myself.

Much to my surprise, the book was soaked, sodden, sitting in a small pool of water when I retrieved it.

And no other area of the car was the least bit damp.

How did this happen? I wondered, totally baffled.

It remains a mystery.

The Condiment Wars: Heinz and French's Put the Squeeze on Each Other.  (Bloomberg, 4/16/2015)
Yes, the same stuff Heinz has been selling in bulk for years will now be available at supermarkets. You've probably eaten it before, squeezed it out of little packets onto premade sandwiches, or squirted it on a hotdog before toddling back to your seat at a baseball game. Unless you looked closely, you might not have even realized it was made by Heinz because it looks just like plain, old-fashioned mustard. Or in other words, it looks just like the ubiquitous yellow stuff made by French's.
French's has a new product of its own: ketchup.

It seems as though nothing will wake us up from our long slumber (part 1)

Toxic Algae Outbreak Overwhelms a Polluted Ohio River.  (The New York Times, 9/30/2015)
The only other recorded toxic algae bloom, in 2008, covered perhaps 40 miles of the river. In contrast, the latest bloom stretches 636 miles from Wheeling, W.Va., to Cannelton, Ind., and traces of algae have appeared as far west as Illinois.
The poisonous alga, called microcystis, increasingly plagues polluted waters across the country. The Ohio River blooms arrived as another persistent algae outbreak, in western Lake Erie, grew in recent weeks to near-record proportions.

As quoted in Can Kevin McCarthy, House Speaker Favorite, Go From Buddy to Boss?  (The New York Times, 9/30/2015)
Despite his rapid ascent on Capitol Hill, Mr. McCarthy has continued, like a number of House conservatives, to sleep in his office and shower in the House gym. The idea is to save money and show that he has not “gone Washington.” Nonetheless, Kevin Spacey shadowed Mr. McCarthy around the Capitol to prepare for his role as Frank Underwood, the House majority whip and now president in the Netflix series “House of Cards.”

UPDATE: No Friend to the Environment: Republican Representative Cynthia Lummis, Wyoming's At-Large Congressional District

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have a lot of catching up to do with the American public, even folks in their own party.

Many Conservative Republicans Believe Climate Change Is a Real Threat.  (The New York Times, 9/28/2015)
The survey was commissioned by Jay Faison, a North Carolina businessman who calls himself a conservative Republican and has announced that he intends to spend $10 million on efforts to lobby Republicans to embrace the issue of climate change. He has spent $165 million to start a nonprofit foundation, ClearPath, aimed at promoting climate change and clean energy policies that could appeal to conservatives.
