While wild birds broadly are identified as the primary source of HPAI pressure on commercial farms, Spackman was specific: dabbling ducks — mallards and other puddle ducks — are the central reservoir species. 

"Dabbling ducks or puddle ducks are the main carriers and natural host species that become infected but don't become sick," Spackman said. "Swans and geese generally tend to die from the virus, but ducks keep circulating it."
