Marian, never quite as popular as Marion, nonetheless followed a similar trajectory -- a strong 1st half of the 20th century, followed by a rapid decline thereafter.

Q:  OK, so why the bump in 1954?

A:  In 1953, with the encyclical Fulgens corona, Pope Pius ordered a Marian year for 1954, the first in Church history. The year was filled with Marian initiatives, in the areas of Mariology, cultural events, and charity and social gatherings. (Wikipedia)

The 'jump' has nothing to do with golf.  Why link the two?

Wisconsin saw its biggest one-day increase in positive COVID-19 cases Wednesday, likely fueled by an outbreak at a meatpacking plant in Green Bay.

Likely?

Nearly 150 people have been infected with the coronavirus as part of a cluster linked to a meatpacking plant, in what appears to be Wisconsin's largest outbreak from a single facility.
Brown County officials said Wednesday that 147 cases of COVID-19 stem from infections at JBS Packerland on Lime Kiln Road in Green Bay. That number includes employees and relatives who live with them.

COVID-19 is the leading cause of death in the United States in April 2020 so far

The Coronavirus in America:  The Year Ahead.   (The New York Times, 4/18/2020)
Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, is arguably the leading cause of death in the United States right now. The virus has killed more than 1,800 Americans almost every day since April 7, and the official toll may be an undercount. By comparison, heart disease typically kills 1,774 Americans a day, and cancer kills 1,641. Yes, the coronavirus curves are plateauing. There are fewer hospital admissions in New York, the center of the epidemic, and fewer Covid-19 patients in I.C.U.s. The daily death toll is still grim, but no longer rising.

Why We Don’t Know the True Death Rate for Covid-19.  (The New York Times, 4/17/2020)
In fact, even the number of people dying is a moving target. Covid-19 deaths that happen at home appear to be widely underreported. And New York City increased its death count by more than 3,700 on Tuesday, after officials said they were now including people who had never tested positive for the virus but were presumed to have died of it.
