Trump-lovin' Illinois news: You asked for it, Macon County

 Election results:  Wikipedia

To the workers here, those mills — the largest in the world — are their livelihoods. “It’d have a huge impact,” a 37-year-old electrician who would identify himself by only his first name, Tyler, said of Mr. Kennedy’s declaration of war on corn syrup and corn oil. He was grabbing lunch at Debbie’s Diner in the shadow of the mills. “That shuts down Central Illinois, if A.D.M. shuts down.”

The population of Macon County peaked at 131,175 in 1980 and has since decline 23% to just over 100,000.

% of population 25 and older with bachelor's degree:
  • 23.9% - Macon County
  • 36.7% - Illinois
  • 34.3% - U.S.
% of population 65 and older:
  • 21.6% - Macon County
  • 17.6% - Illinois
  • 17.7% - U.S.
% of population living in poverty:
  • 14.8% - Macon County
  • 11.6% - Illinois
  • 11.1% - U.S.

U.S. 40 Cross Section of the United States of America (Chapter 63: State Border)

That was then (1953)

From chapter 63
In the highly federalized United States, since the Civil War at least, state boundaries have had a more sentimental than practical significance.  On a modern highway, as the tourist passes from one state to another, he may not a change of speed-limit, though he will rarely for this reason change the speed at which he is driving.

This is now.

On average, Juan Soto will be paid $143,379 per day for the next 15 years

Or $5,974.12 per hour, asleep or awake.

This is just...

From the AP article:
Soto’s deal, the largest and longest in baseball history, was pending a physical. The agreement reverberated across the winter meetings and stung the Yankees, who on Sunday morning had raised their offer to $760 million over 16 years from $712.5 million for 15 years.
“My first thought is that my oldest kid is going to be 28 when he’s done playing. That really puts it in perspective for me,” San Francisco president of baseball operations Buster Posey said.

Such reasoning can amount to an excuse, of course. But there’s no denying free agency can be a gamble. Even lesser deals without massive publicity don’t work out. Think Jeimer Candelario in Cincinnati or Mitch Haniger in San Francisco and now Seattle. In the case of Pittsburgh’s Ke’Bryan Hayes, even the en vogue pre-arbitration extension isn’t looking like a wise investment for a notoriously penny-pinching ownership.

GET ME REWRITE: Incompetent members of Ottawa Impact stumble to the finish line in "turmoil-filled year"

Headline:  mlive, 12/10/2024
Both Wetmore and Epperson were hired in 2023 under the leadership of county Board Chair Joe Moss, co-founder of the highly conservative political platform Ottawa Impact.
And both came to the county amid controversy or scrutiny over their backgrounds.
Epperson played a role in a significant lawsuit filed against Ottawa County in October after it was revealed that he was given the executive aide job over a better qualified candidate.
That candidate, Ryan Kimball, filed a lawsuit and eventually won a $225,000 settlement against the county.
Testimony showed that then-Administrator John Gibbs wanted to hire Epperson because he wanted someone he could “boss around.” Epperson was 23 at the time.

Welcome to Retiring Guy's 15-minute neighborhood in Middleton Wisocnsin

Clarendon, a dense urban neighborhood of about 1,500 people, offered a favorable comparison. Everything we needed was just a short walk away. To be precise: 3.4 minutes, on average.
That’s according to a new study by researchers at Sony’s computer science lab in Rome. They combined population data, millions of points of interest from OpenStreetMap and an open-source routing algorithm to calculate how long it takes to walk to a bundle of amenities — from restaurants and schools to parks and theaters.
The work was inspired by the 15-minute neighborhood, an idea that has gained recent popularity as a means to create more-vibrant communities and reduce passenger vehicle travel, which accounts for about one-sixth of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, according to a recent estimate.

Rudy Giuliani, unrepentant
Tulsa pastor Jackson Lahmeyer lays hands on Rudy Giuliani and prays for him at Sheridan Church last weekend. (via Facebook) Although Rudy Giuliani has become one of the most disgraced of the 2020 election deniers, he got a warm welcome last Sunday at a Pentecostal church in Tulsa, Okla.
The former mayor of New York, who has gone bankrupt due to judgments against him for defaming two Georgia election workers, was the guest of honor at Sheridan Church, where Donald Trump admirer Jackson Lahmeyer is pastor.
Lahmeyer was the first pastor to publicly support Trump in his bid for the White House in 2024, creating a group called Pastors for Trump even as other prominent faith leaders remained silent about the second coming of Trump.
