Circulation of avian flu in wild birds endangers Europe's commercial poultry flocks

Headline:  WATT Poultry, 3/17/2026

Although down from a peak around the turn of the year, detections of H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses in Europe continue at high levels relative to previous years.
This is among the trends noted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in a review covering the period December 2025 to February of 2026.
Over the three-month period, the virus was detected more than 2,500 times in 32 countries across the region. Of these detections, 406 were made after testing domestic birds — 289 poultry, and 117 captive birds — with the remaining 2,108 in wild birds.
Over 90% of the cases in domestic poultry were linked to primary introductions from wild birds, according to the report’s authors. [emphasis added]
