Thanks to an ongoing GOP shit show, Democrats overperformed in Iowa in 2025

Headline:  Des Moines Register, 1/12/2026

Tim Webber reports:
Iowa Democrats ended 2025 on a high note, winning a Dec. 30 special election in Des Moines' western suburbs by a wider margin than during the presidential election.
That capped off a year in which Democrats won four of the six legislative special elections and ended Republicans’ supermajority in the Iowa Senate.
In five of those six special elections, Democrats overperformed by more than 20 percentage points compared with 2024.
They’ll look to build off the momentum going into the pivotal 2026 midterms that will include open races for governor and U.S. senator as well as regular Iowa congressional and Legislature elections.
Whether 2025's Democratic Party victories are bellwethers or blips will play out this year.

According to Merriam-Webster, the first-known use of 'shit show', as in something (such as an event or a situation) that is chaotic, contentious, or unpleasant to an excessive or absurd degree, occurred in 1976.

Yes, America, it's true; Donald Trump doesn't give a shit about us

Headline and table:  Strength in Numbers, 1/18/2026

A CNN poll released this week finds that 58% of Americans say Trump’s first year back in office has been a failure. It also finds a majority thinks he’s focused on the wrong issues, and over 60% say he’s not focused enough on the cost of living.
CNN reports that when people are asked to identify the country’s top problem today, Americans pick the economy by a nearly two-to-one margin over any other topic. And 64% say Trump has not done enough to reduce the cost of everyday goods. Just 36% say the president has the right priorities — down from 45% near the start of his term, and rivaling Joe Biden’s worst numbers during his term. Only one-third believe Trump cares about people like them, a new record low for the president.

Bari Weiss and the Tony Dokoupil CBS Evening News Clown Show humiliation ritual

CBS News earns a 'dart' from CJR:
When Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staffers on her first morning call, she ended her comments with “Let’s do the fucking news.” Three months in, she’s definitely trying to do something—but it’s not entirely clear that it’s the news.
By now you’ve likely read about Weiss’s various missteps in her new role: spiking a 60 Minutes story unfavorable to the Trump administration, sending scolding missives to the newsroom on journalism ethics, declaring “We love America” as a new guiding principle for the relaunch of the CBS Evening News. (If you’ve managed to miss all this somehow, this piece from my colleague Jem Bartholomew is a good place to start.)
It’s that reimagining of the CBS Evening News that’s gotten the most attention in recent weeks, thanks to a series of confusing MAGA-friendly editorial decisions, cringe-inducing social media posts, and insipid both-sidesing show closers that are beginning to feel like a humiliation ritual for Tony Dokoupil, Weiss’s newly minted anchor[emphasis added]
