Roy Graber reports:
With these latest instances of HPAI, the United States egg industry has now lost more than 150 million birds during the 2022-26 outbreak, according to information provided by APHIS and compiled by WATT Global Media.
Laying hen losses during this time have reached 142,636,100, while pullet losses have now reached 8,555,300. That number, however, does not include whatever losses might have occurred with the Dauphin County flock. A total of 152 U.S. layer and pullet flocks have been affected so far during the outbreak, with 129 of those being laying hen flocks and 23 of them being pullet flocks.
The U.S. egg industry has lost approximately 7.08 million birds so far in 2026. Other yearly losses during the outbreak include:
  • 2022 – 34 flocks and 44.31 million birds
  • 2023 – 18 flocks and 14.39 million birds
  • 2024 – 34 flocks and 40.19 million birds
  • 2025 – 58 flocks and 45.22 million birds
Those figures do not reflect losses in the broiler, turkey, duck or upland gamebird industries.
