GET ME REWRITE: Donald Trump fuels the persistent presence of white supremacy in America

Headline:  Rolling Out, 12/27/2024
In a troubling incident that underscores the persistent presence of White supremacy in America, racist flyers were discovered in the Milwaukee area, targeting immigrant communities and promoting hateful ideologies. This alarming event comes on the heels of the election of a president who has been described as friendly to White nationalist sentiments, raising questions about the ongoing anger and grievances among White supremacists. GET ME REWRITE: Texas generals in GOP War on Women create a “dumpster baby” epidemic

Headline:  Washington Post, 12/28/2024
Statewide, according to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, at least 18 babies have been abandoned this year. The latest occurred just before Christmas at a Whataburger in San Antonio. A decade ago, the number was seven.
Whether there’s a pattern or common link in these tragedies is not clear. But they’re happening in a state with one of the nation’s most restrictive abortion bans — with no exceptions for rape or incest — and one of the highest birth rates[emphasis added]

Iowa records first human case of bird flu

Headline:  WATT Poultry, 12/27/2024
The individual was exposed to infected poultry while working with a commercial flock in northwest Iowa. The individual reported mild symptoms, has received appropriate treatment and is recovering. The case was identified through testing at the State Hygienic Laboratory and confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
As of December 20, 2024, the CDC has reported 64 confirmed human cases of H5 HPAI across nine states. The majority of the exposures are linked to infected poultry or dairy cows. There is no evidence that human-to-human transmission of influenza A(H5) is occurring in the U.S. Although human infections are rare,

Headline:  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 12/27/2024

When GOP judge shopping doesn't work out
The Waukesha-based District II Court of Appeals rejected Vos' efforts to reverse Dane County Circuit Court decisions ordering the state to pick up $143,211 in legal fees for one American Oversight case and $98,000 for a second one. The rulings make clear the costs will ultimately be paid by taxpayers.
In a separate ruling, the Appeals Court dismissed a contempt order issued against the state Office of Special Counsel for violating a court order directing it to provide American Oversight with all the records it sought from the agency. Former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, who oversaw the Office of Special Counsel, was also cleared of having to pay a $24,000 fine.

Gunshots or fireworks? They made the call!

HeadlineWisconsin State Journal, 12/26/2024
The callers reported that they heard about four shots in the 1500 block of Trailsway around 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, spokesperson officer Korrie Rondorf said in a statement. Callers also reported seeing a car leave the area at high speed with loud music coming from it. The investigation determined that kids were in the area playing with firecrackers and the vehicle that left the area was not involved.
Rome has it that the callers spend hours each day on Next Door.

Bryan Steil
Headline:  AlterNet, 12/23/2024
Steil's ACE Act, which "includes nearly 50 standalone bills sponsored by members of the House Republican Conference," is "the most conservative election integrity bill to be seriously considered in the House in over 20 years," according to his committee.
Dozens of organizations wrote to Steil and Rep. Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.), the panel's ranking Democrat, last year that "we believe Congress has an important role to play in safeguarding free and fair elections and ensuring all Americans have the freedom to vote. Rather than furthering this goal, the ACE Act would be a substantial step backwards."
"The act would nationalize harmful and unnecessary restrictions on voting rights and roll back many of Washington, D.C.'s current pro-voter laws," the coalition explained. "Instead of proceeding with this legislation, Congress should take actions that will help voters and promote democracy such as passing legislation that will strengthen protections against discrimination in voting and expand access to the ballot for all communities."
