Sonia Spitz reports:
Daybreak Foods is temporarily laying off 87 workers following a rise in Avian flu cases and a U.S. Department of Agriculture mandate to depopulate birds at affected facilities.
The Lake Mills-based company will begin layoffs on April 1, which will include several of Daybreak’s animal caretakers, line workers, processing leads, dock attendants, quality, sanitation, maintenance and manure technicians, and bio building attendants, according to a WARN notice filed Friday with the Department of Workforce Development.
The company will lay off 55 workers at its Cold Spring Farm located at W2024 Highway 59 in Palmyra, and 32 workers at its S&R Farm located at N9416 Tamarack Road in Whitewater.
“Due to the required depopulation of the birds, the fact that depopulation clean-up operations are nearing conclusion, and the estimated time it will take to obtain approval to repopulate the facility with new birds and complete the repopulation, it has become clear that (Daybreak) will not have sufficient work available at the facilities to support all of its current employees at the facilities at this time,” the WARN notice said.
