Iowa GOP: Boogying its way to a midterm election doomsday

HeadlineDes Moines Register, 5/16/2025

Republican U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks sits on the Energy and Commerce committee, which was tasked with finding $880 billion in cuts to programs it oversees, including Medicaid, over the next 10 years.
And U.S. Reps. Zach Nunn and Randy Feenstra sit on the Agriculture Committee, which was instructed to find $230 billion in cuts, including overhauling SNAP, a program that helps 42 million Americans pay for food.
Republicans have said the cuts are necessary to put a check on government overspending by curbing waste and abuse, as well as to make room for an extension of Trump’s signature 2017 tax cuts.

Louisiana GOP senator Bill Cassidy M.D.: Still getting snookered by RFKjr

Headline:  Politico, 5/13/2025

Carmen Paun and Adam Cancryn report:
Since then, Cassidy has refrained from publicly criticizing the secretary, even as Kennedy has pledged new scrutiny for Covid-19 vaccines, offered lukewarm endorsement of the measles shot during an outbreak and reportedly hired a vaccine skeptic to lead a search for autism’s cause.
From his perch as chair of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Cassidy could make life miserable for Kennedy by interrogating him, second-guessing his decisions and calling critics to testify against him.
But Cassidy over the last two months has instead chosen to try to influence Kennedy behind the scenes, believing it would be more productive to privately press Kennedy on thorny issues like vaccines rather than join the chorus of loud-yet-largely ineffective opposition, according to a person who has discussed the matter with Cassidy and was granted anonymity to share details of private conversations.
Bill is so...

Dr. Bill chose to preserve his political future over saving lives.  Unconscionable!  America deserve an explanation and an apology!

Louisiana GOP senator Bill Cassidy M.D. visits Fantasyland

Headline:  NBC News, 5/14/2025

Ben Kamisar, Kate Santaliz, and Frank Thorp V report:
The episode, and Murphy’s repeated decision to invoke Kennedy’s promises to Cassidy to argue he misled the committee about his stance on vaccines, highlights the tenuous truce Cassidy has carved out with Kennedy, particularly as the Louisiana senator faces the prospect of a primary challenge from his right flank in 2026. He has long been on tenuous political ground with Trump's MAGA movement, after voting to convict the president on impeachment charges following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
While Cassidy largely avoided the issue of vaccines and Kennedy's record during Wednesday's hearing, he did briefly step in "for the record" to note that Kennedy erred by saying that no vaccine besides the Covid shot had been tested against a placebo.
Bill got so...

Dr. Bill chose to preserve his political future over saving lives.  Unconscionable!  America deserve an explanation and an apology!

Dear Jason Aldean: Trifecta of sexual abuse, bribery, and suicide happened in a small town. Best, Retiring Guy

HeadlineNew York Times, 5/15/2025

As his wealth and influence grew, so did Mr. Soudani’s power over his sister, she said. Given his prominence in the community, he pointed out to her, no one would believe her accounts of abuse. If she tried to escape, he warned, he would use his connections to find and punish her.
“Over the years, my uncle treated my mother as his property, controlling her movements, both emotionally and physically,” said Martin Soudani, Ms. Soudani’s son.

MISCREANT PREACHERS: Sexual assault in the Name of the Lord (#128 in a series)

Kim Roberts reports:
Christopher Whitehead, a 35-year-old pastor of Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church in Gainesville, was arrested last year for allegedly assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
Whitehead is facing charges of sexual battery on a minor and lewd and lascivious battery. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in March, according to the Gainesville-based WCJB.

"For God wants you to be holy and pure and to keep clear of all sexual sin so that each of you will marry in holiness and honor not in lustful passion as the heathen do, in their ignorance of God and his ways."  (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5)

Michigan GOP: Desperately seeking distractions

Headline:  Michigan Advance, 5/15/2025

Anna Liz Nichols reports:
Earlier Thursday morning Linting and proponents for the bills, including anti-trans athlete advocate and former NCAA swimmer for the University of Kentucky Riley Gaines, who pre-recorded her testimony, advocated in the House Government Operations Committee for an amendment to Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Right Act specifying schools can base sports eligibility based on sex markers on original birth certificates.
If the sponsors of the bills are so interested in the health and safety of women and girls, they ought to look at actual issues impacting their safety like gun violence, housing affordability or food insecurity, Emme Zanotti, senior director of movement building and political affairs at Equality Michigan said during the committee meeting.

Which is why we have all of these GOP distractions in the first place.

Trump Department of Racism is open for business

HeadlineNew York Times, 5/16/2025 (highlight added)

Sarah Mervosh reports:
It has been 71 years since the Supreme Court made racially segregated schools illegal in its landmark 1954 ruling, Brown v. Board of Education. Louisiana officials say that federal orders forcing school districts to comply with the decision are outdated and no longer needed, and that the country needs to move on.
Civil rights advocates see the effort as part of a broader attack on Black students and civil rights under the Trump administration, at a time when U.S. schools are only growing more segregated.
Nationally, more than 300 desegregation orders are estimated to still be on the books from the 1960s and 1970s, when school districts resistant to integration were put under the supervision of federal courts. In the decades since, many orders have gone dormant, with little federal enforcement.

Headline:  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 5/16/2025

Lawrence Andrea and Molly Back report:
The leader of the Wisconsin GOP will face the party faithful at their convention this weekend as he fends off calls for his ouster after a bruising spring election loss and years of disappointing fundraising.
Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Brian Schimming is under scrutiny following two consecutive double-digit losses in races for the state Supreme Court that cemented liberal control of the state's highest court for years.
Even with President Donald Trump's win in November, Schimming could soon face moves to remove him as chairman of the party, according to GOP sources.

GOP to Bros: Guns yes titties no

HeadlineMilwaukee Journal Sentinel, 5/15/2025

Kristin Brey opines about two of the wackiest shits in Congress:
Are you worried about paying your bills? Affording health care? Or watching democracy crumble like a Nature Valley granola bar?
Well, never fear, Utah Senator Mike Lee is here to protect you from the real threat: your incognito tab.
Yes, Lee and fellow Republican Rep. Mary Miller’s Interstate Obscenity Definition Act would criminalize all pornography.
The bill would create a national definition of obscenity under the Communications Act of 1934 and amend the Supreme Court’s 1973 “Miller Test” for determining what qualifies as obscene. Content could be deemed obscene if it depicts or describes “actual or simulated sexual acts with the objective intent to arouse, titillate or gratify the sexual desires of a person.”

Asheville, North Carolina-based voter Copland Rudolph told Salon, "I wish it felt like more of a relief than it does, honestly, because I know it's a temporary relief. I am still angry (about) the amount of energy, time, money that Jefferson Griffin siphoned from this state, and particularly this community, with his own self-interest centered. I hope he recognizes the other side: that he has fired up women voters in this state — that we're done. We're done with the nonsense."
