William DeKay reports:
Why do dairy cows appear susceptible to the H5N1 virus while beef cattle seem to have escaped infection?
The question has researchers looking for a clear answer.
Researchers have identified several possible explanations, ranging from the unique biology of dairy cattle and the way they are managed to the role of milking equipment and feed contamination.
However, no single factor fully explains why the virus has spread through hundreds of U.S. dairy farms while remaining absent from beef herds in the United States and Canada.
