As Donald Trump’s war with Iran enters another day, so too does his holy war with Pope Leo. It might seem ridiculous for an embattled president to go head-to-head with the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics, but Trump has no shortage of MAGA acolytes defending his attacks. The latest is Fox News host Sean Hannity, who used his radio and TV platforms to accuse the pontiff of feigning “selective moral outrage” and being “more interested in spreading left wing politics than the actual teachings of Jesus Christ.” Hannity’s mansplaining comes on the heels of Catholic convert JD Vance, House Speaker Mike Johnson and MAGA evangelist Franklin Graham lining up to defend Trump’s latest feud. But for a president already struggling to control events in the Middle East, picking a fight with the Vatican looks less like strategy and more like habit. It’s another front in a battle Trump will struggle to win. [emphasis added]
