A pair of state-owned buildings in Downtown Madison — sitting on prime Isthmus real estate — are officially up for sale as part of ongoing efforts to reduce spending and shrink state government’s footprint near the Capitol.
State Department of Administration Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld announced Wednesday that bidding has opened for the General Executive Facility 2, or GEF 2, at 101 S. Webster St., and GEF 3, at 125 S. Webster St.
The two buildings, located on a parcel known as Block 107, previously housed the state’s Department of Natural Resources, Department of Public Instruction and Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. Those agencies have since been relocated to other state-owned properties.
It’s expected both buildings, which the state wants to sell to a single buyer, would eventually be demolished and the parcels redeveloped. The existing buildings comprise more than 390,000 square feet of office space and underground parking.

The State Natural Resources Building, also know as General Executive Facility (GEF) 2, was constructed in 1978 and occupied in April of 1980. It contains 223,270 GSF of office space on six (6) stories above ground. There are also two basement levels (first level accesses Plaza between GEF 2 & 3).

Constructed in 1978 and occupied in April, 1980, General Executive Facility (GEF) 3, contains 167,735 GSF of office space on six (6) levels above ground. There are also two (2) basement levels of parking containing 86,117 GSF.
