The #2 and #5 happiest cities are in North Dakota -- Bismarck and Fargo -- so you might want to take these rankings with a grain of salt.
Headline: Wisconsin State Journal, 3/19/2026
To create the report, personal finance website WalletHub analyzed 182 cities – the 150 most populated cities in the United States, as well as at least two of the cities with the highest population in each state.
WalletHub then evaluated those cities on 29 "key indicators of happiness," including income growth, depression rates and average daily leisure time. Those indicators were considered, and weighted at varying amounts, in three categories: emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment.
Madison particularly stood out in the emotional and physical well-being category, where it ranked 13th. In that category, WalletHub considered factors like the rate of people reporting getting adequate sleep, the depression rate, the sports participation rate, the rate of food insecurity and the life expectancy.
