Over chants of "love not hate," Iowa GOP lawmakers advanced two bills barring local governments from establishing protections against gender identity-based discrimination and exempting LGBTQ conversion therapy from the definition of child abuse.
LGBTQ advocates have resoundingly condemned those efforts, and more than 100 protesters filled a hallway of the Iowa Capitol Monday, Feb. 9, as a three-member House panel approved House Study Bill 664 — Gov. Kim Reynolds' bill barring local governments from setting non-discrimination policies protecting trans and nonbinary people. [emphasis added]
The measure would expand the state's 2025 law that eliminated gender identity as a protected class in the Iowa Civil Rights Act.
