California reports death of bald eagle from bird flu

Highly pathogenic bird flu was the primary underlying cause of death for Jackie, the beloved bald eagle from Big Bear Valley, according to final necropsy findings released by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and additional information shared by the Ojai Raptor Center. 

The findings revealed that the virus caused an unusual and severe medical condition involving stomach ulceration, persistent internal bleeding, anemia and a secondary bacterial infection that ultimately contributed to Jackie’s decline and death.

Article Summary 

Highly pathogenic avian influenza continues spreading through Canadian commercial poultry operations, with Manitoba reporting 10 affected flocks since September and Alberta experiencing eight cases year-to-date, as two new infections were confirmed in October.\ 

• Two new HPAI cases confirmed in Canada: October 14 in Roblin, Manitoba and October 12 in Sturgeon County, Alberta 

• Manitoba has been hit hardest with 10 commercial poultry flocks affected since September 10 

• Alberta reports 8 affected flocks year-to-date, including 5 cases since September and 3 earlier in May 

• Manitoba had been HPAI-free since December 2025 before the current outbreak began 

• The U.S. has not reported HPAI in commercial poultry since October 9 in Minnesota

Staff report:

According to an arrest citation, on Oct. 13, Jared Oneil Salmons, 48, of Wiley Fork Road, Leburn, was arrested on 17 counts of distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor under 12 years old. 

Salmons is pastor of Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Cornettsville. 

Kentucky State Police said in a statement that Salmons was located, interviewed and arrested as the result of an Internet Crimes Against Children investigation.
