USA box office on Memorial Day weekend (Friday-Sunday) from 2017 to 2024

 

USA box office on the Memorial Day weekend of May 2024 is down 38% compared to last year when "The Little Mermaid" was the top-grossing movie.  "Furiosa: A Mad Max Story" and "The Garfield Movie" are duking it out for the top spot this weekend.

And it's down 44% compared to the 2018 peak when "Solo: A Star Wars Story" ruled the weekend box office.

Imperator Furiosa has battled ruthless kidnappers, raider attacks and maniacal warlords as she traverses a lawless Wasteland. And yet her fiercest adversary, at least today, seems to be a lazy cat who loves lasagna. 

The Warner Bros. high-octane prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is facing off against Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” for first place on box office charts over Memorial Day weekend. Each movie has generated roughly $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through Monday. Both studios are reporting that its own movie has ranked No. 1. Whichever pulls ahead, it’ll be the worst Memorial Day opening weekend in nearly three decades.

Defying tradition, the Ottawa County GOP has issued candidate endorsements a full two months before the Aug. 6 primary, a move several area Republicans argue interferes with voters. 

“This is totally unprecedented,” said Michigan Republican Party Chair Pete Hoekstra. 

The county GOP’s endorsement convention on May 16 wasn’t entirely surprising after far-right fundamentalist group Ottawa Impact took a controlling majority on the county board of commissioners and within the local party network early in 2023. 

The group, which formed in 2021 over frustrations with county and state COVID-19 mitigation measures, is led by self-described “parental rights advocatesparental rights advocates” Joe Moss and Sylvia Rhodea and currently holds a six-seat controlling majority on the 11-member Ottawa County board. Supporters often are critical of what they view as ineffective establishment conservatives who have led the party previously.

Mr. Carr was 39 when he published “The Alienist,” an atmospheric detective story about a child psychiatrist — or an alienist, as those who studied the mind were called in the 1890s — who investigates the murders of young male prostitutes by using forensic psychiatry, which was an unorthodox method at the time 

. Mr. Carr had first pitched the book as nonfiction; it wasn’t, but it read that way because of the exhaustive research he did into the period. He rendered the dank horrors of Manhattan’s tenement life, its sadistic gangs and the seedy brothels that were peddling children, as well as the city’s lush hubs of power, like Delmonico’s restaurant. And he peopled his novel with historical figures like Theodore Roosevelt, who was New York’s reforming police commissioner before his years in the White House. Even Jacob Riis had a cameo.
