Moss, in his March 12 statement, said the county’s previous legal counsel, Silver & Van Essen, earned a combined $328,000 in 2022, $417,000 in 2021 and $460,000 in 2020. Legal costs in 2020 and 2021 may have been higher because of pandemic-related costs.
MLive has filed a FOIA to receive a detailed account of fees billed by Silver & Van Essen in 2022. Moss praised the Kallman Legal Group’s work. He said their attorneys provided significant work last year to “resolve deficiencies and put new processes and standardized contracts into place.”
Moss leads the ultra-conservative majority faction on the Ottawa County Board known as Ottawa Impact. The group came under high scrutiny for several controversial decisions in 2023
