Elsewhere at the domestic box office, several Thanksgiving leftovers fended for scraps. Disney’s animated adventure “Strange World,” which collapsed with its $12 million debut, wasn’t able to rebound. The movie took third place with $4.9 million from 4,174 theaters in its second weekend, a 60% decline from its opening. So far, the family film has earned $25.5 million in North America and $42.3 million globally — a disastrous result. Since it cost roughly $200 million to produce and tens of millions more to market, sources estimate that “Strange World” will lose at least $100 million in its theatrical run. At the No. 4 spot,
“The Menu,” a dark satire from Searchlight Pictures, generated $3.6 million from 2,810 locations. After three weeks in theaters, the film has grossed $24.7 million in North America and $47 million worldwide. It cost $25 million to make.
Sony’s “Devotion,” an inspirational drama starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, rounded out the top five with $2.8 million from 3,405 venues. The movie has grossed just $13.8 million to date, a tragic turnout given its $90 million budget.

Gold Derby, 11/30/2022

Welcome to a "Hooray for Hollywood" mouthpiece!
Reports of the movie industry’s death have been greatly exaggerated. When Covid-19 shuttered theaters in 2020 and 2021, some analysts suspected it would lead to the demise of the movie-going experience. Covid Schmovid!
As more and more Americans learn to live with the pandemic, box office numbers continue to rise. In fact, several movies released in the 2022 calendar year have become domestic box office hits, crossing the coveted $100 million threshold.

Gold Derby's list includes 16 films.  By comparison, 29 films reached the 'coveted $100 million threshold' in 2019, 35 films in 2018, 35 in 2017.

The Wrap, 12/3/2022
The box office is set to slide into another dry period with Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” expected to add $15-16 million in its fourth weekend to bring it to the doorstep of $400 million domestic and staying No. 1 despite diminishing holdovers.
Only a minimal amount of support is coming from Universal’s seasonal action comedy “Violent Night,” which looks to meet projections with an $11.8 million opening weekend after taking $4.8 million from 3,682 theaters on Friday. Starring David Harbour as a surly, beatdown-dealing Santa Claus and produced by David Leitch’s 87North, the R-rated film has a $20 million budget and could turn a modest profit.
