USA box office for the 3rd weekend of January 2017-2024

USA box office on the second weekend of January 2024 is down 3% compared to last year when "Avatar: The Way of Water" was the top-grossing movie.  "Mean Girls" was the top-grossing movie this weekend.

And it's down 28% compared to the 2018 peak when "Jumanji:  Welcome to the Jungle" was the top draw.

The “Mean Girls” movie musical topped a sleepy box office as “I.S.S.,” a sci-fi thriller that takes place aboard the International Space Station, misfired in its opening weekend. “Mean Girls” added $11.7 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its domestic tally to $50 million.
Ticket sales dropped a steep 59% from its debut. However, the film’s decline is cushioned by its modest $36 million budget, which makes its box office performance outsized.
Overall, it’s been a desolate weekend for the movie theater business. To punctuate the box office doldrums, three movies in the top five were released around Christmas.

Moviegoing habits around the globe are still trying to find their footing after the COVID-19 crisis. While there have been gains every year, 2023 global revenue would still lag behind 2019 by 21 percent to 22 percent, while Gower Street’s projection for 2024 would rep a 25 percent slump from 2019. The good news: 2023 revenue will be up 29 percent over 2022, including an uptick of 20 percent to 22 percent in North America.
