Extreme weather conditions are pummeling a large portion of the U.S. with frigid temperatures, high winds and blankets of snow, contributing to lackluster turnout at the movies. For theater owners, it’s an especially disappointing coda to 2022 because they rely on the holiday season for bustling attendance. Hollywood was already concerned that grosses would be depressed because Christmas Eve falls on Saturday and Christmas lands on Sunday, cutting into the weekend numbers. With bad weather, as well as rising concerns about cases of COVID, RSV and the flu, a trio of new releases failed to resonate at the box office.

SUNDAY AM: We’re hearing that some of those near 80 theaters that were closed are trying to get open today for what is typically the first of many lucrative moviegoing days as holiday distractions ease. That’s been complicated this year by Winter Storm Elliott in the Midwest, as well as power outages and deep wind chill that’s keeping many at home, and not driving to cinemas.
As far as where the box office stands now, as one distribution source observes, “These numbers are still very fluid” as hopefully a bounce in business occurs as the wicked winter weather calms. Power outages have already simmered to about 231K customers this AM.

Paramount’s Babylon had a $1.47M Friday, which is translating into a $3.34M 3-day and 4-day of $5M. The 3 hour, 8 minute running time Hollywood period pic received a C+ from audiences who bought tickets. Not shocking for a movie with a first half hour that includes an elephant popping on someone, and a Fatty Arbuckle-like character reaping enjoyment at a raging party out of a — nevermind.

By Friday morning, studios learned that at least 44 theaters have closed because of inclement weather. The majority of the closures are in the Midwest, where temperatures have plummeted and there are power outages. While the storm began to impact certain markets on Thursday, distributors are waiting to see how badly moviegoing is affected overall on Friday and Saturday.
A number of new films are vying for attention at the Christmas box office, led by Avatar: The Way of Water and followed by new nationwide offerings Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Babylon and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

Elliott is going to be a big factor in this year's Christmas season box office.  A depressing factor.  As if Hollywood needs any more bad news.

Fasten your seat belts: Hollywood is in for another bumpy ride in 2023.
With the economy once again on the brink of a recession and cutbacks hitting hard all over town, the entertainment industry is bracing for more challenges in the year ahead. Among the many question marks for 2023: Will the movie business revive to pre-pandemic levels? When will the high drama at Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery settle down? And how viable is streaming as a business model for legacy media companies anyway?
