The legal dispute and later court hearing was the result of a split Nov. 6 vote by commissioners following a closed session about Hambley’s future. Some commissioners believed they were voting to authorize the county’s attorneys to write up paperwork for a $4 million settlement, but board Chair Joe Moss said the vote was simply to continue negotiations with Hambley.
A majority faction of county commissioners in January 2023 announced they planned to replace Hambley with another Nathaniel Kelly, a Hudsonville resident who works as a health and safety manager at an HVAC service company.
A majority of board members are affiliated with a conservative group called Ottawa Impact know for criticism of pandemic mask mandates.
