Wisconsin Republicans this week moved closer with a clawback of what they see as overreach by Gov. Tony Evers.
The proposed constitutional amendment would ban the state from restricting gatherings in places of worship in response to a state of emergency, including health emergencies.
This measure stems from Republican opposition to Evers' "Safer at Home" order during the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced nonessential businesses to shut down and limited indoor gatherings.
"What part of 'never infringe the right of every person to worship almighty god according to the dictates of their conscience' did Governor Evers not understand? I don't know. I don't get it," said Rep. Ron Tusler (R-Harrison). -[emphasis added]
