Tim Jeal, who has died aged 81, was a fine novelist and memoirist, but was best known as a biographer of sons of Empire such as David Livingstone, Henry Morton Stanley and Robert Baden-Powell; at times he was accused of iconoclasm, at others of being an imperial apologist, but not even the most carping of reviewers denied his narrative power and gift for bringing the past alive.Jeal was still in his twenties when he published his life of David Livingstone in 1973, marking the centenary of the explorer’s death from dysentery in Chipundu. The book was widely hailed as definitive – George MacDonald Fraser declared in the Washington Post that “there is nothing in the long list of Livingstonia that deserves the title ‘standard life’ more” – and has remained in print for half a century.
